Across Scotland, young people and children from primary to higher education are being encouraged to shape the future of education by partaking in a National Discussion launched by the Scottish Government and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities.

This is an incredibly important conversation to have as we look forward to our future and implement the changes but also prioritise what young people have to say about their experience in education and more importantly what do they want out of their education.

There was a recent Muir review which suggested putting learners at the fore front of the Scottish education system and stated that it needs a new vision to pave the way for education.

So why am I talking about this?

There’s been a lack of awareness of this happening in Scotland and I think this discussion is just so important not just for Scottish Children and Young people but for the disabled students who felt like their education didn’t give them justice.

I am a big advocate for disabled children and young people having a voice within our education system because they have a greater understanding of what they believe is missing from the education system whether that is implementing BSL (British Sign Language) or simply having disability awareness training for teachers.

Disability awareness training is so crucial as it can provide teachers with a greater understanding of the ranging varieties of disabilities and tackle discrimination within the classroom

The formation of the ‘Inclusivists’ showed me the importance of disability awareness within our mainstream education as young people shared an enthusiasm towards learning more about disability and I would love to see that excitement implemented in all schools in Scotland.

If all children and young people are taught about disability at a young age, we can prevent the bullying of disabled people in the future and foster a sense of compassion and understanding towards disabled people.

In hopes of raising the profile of the National Discussion, young voices will be heard and encouraged throughout the time period of the discussion.

National Discussion will close on 5th December and consultation will be released Spring 2023
